Beethoven’s 10th symphony has been completed 194 years after his death ... by artificial intelligence.
Using a mere 250 surviving bars of notes left behind by the composer, AI completed his final masterpiece.
And it did such a good job that musicians listening to Symphony No 10 could not tell where Beethoven ended and the computer began.
The machine was fed work by the composer and others who influenced him before it was provided with the fragments of the symphony itself.
A composition is made up of four movements and the other two have previously been reimagined by British musicologist Barry Cooper.
The project was run by Deutsche Telekom, while the AI was designed by Ahmed Elgammal of Rutgers University in New Jersey.
He said: ‘Because of the nature of music being very structured and mathematical, I believed from the beginning that AI can do that.’
The work will have its world premiere in Bonn, Beethoven’s west Germany home town, next week.
