The door was open, pills were spilled but not stolen. A space heater was knocked over. The fire department and gas company found no sign of a leak. No sign of trauma on either body .

Firefighters were called to the property but there were no signs of a gas leak.

Hackman's daughter Elizabeth had speculated earlier on Thursday that her father and stepmother may have been killed by a carbon monoxide leak.

One of the couple's three dogs, a German Shepherd, was found dead about 10 to 15 feet away from Betsy in a closet just off the bathroom.

Earlier reports had suggested the animal was found dead in a kennel. The couple's two other dogs were unharmed.

One of the surviving dogs was found alive close to Betsy's body, with a second roaming the property.

The couple's front door was open and there were no signs of forced entry.

Santa Fe Sheriff's Department has said there is no suggestion of foul play but that an investigation is ongoing.

My theory

He suffers heart attack and falls.

She finds him and decides she will kill herself.

She locks the dog in the closet, the dog that is known to bite.

She opens the door so the other two dogs can run free.

She goes in the bathroom and swallows a bunch of pills and dies.

Iff the dog scratched and clawed the closet it took time to die.
No gas

Iff it died all serene in closet, gas or poison.

Iff gas, then they woulda taken pills and booze whatever and died together on couch.

Dog would be outside, not in closet

Compassionate accomplice removes gas tube and leaves door open for gas to clear out.

The sheriff and gas co said it wasn't co2. Mummification is just another word for dehydration in an arid environment. The open door is not suspicious as it is a large estate. It would not be uncommon for groundskeepers to not notice and they would not inquire as to not invade privacy. They make $ for a reason.
